From Nutrition Calculations to a Chart Note: Inside RDCalc

A clinical nutrition calculation is more useful when its context stays with it: the measurements entered, the method selected, and the assumptions behind the result. RDCalc’s connected adult workflow brings those details together with a chart note that a qualified professional can review and adapt.

Start with shared measurements

The workflow connects reference-weight calculations, estimated nutrition needs, and optional tube-feeding analysis. Height and actual body weight carry between related sections, so shared measurements do not need to be entered again at each step. The professional still chooses the calculation weight and methods appropriate to the assessment.

Keep the basis of each estimate visible

A numerical result alone does not explain how an estimate was reached. RDCalc keeps selected methods, inputs, calculation weights, and assumptions alongside the results. That context remains available while moving between sections and preparing documentation. It supports review of the calculation without suggesting that one method fits every assessment.

Compare feeding provision when relevant

For nutrition-support work, the optional tube-feeding section compares an entered regimen with estimated needs. The feeding analysis and needs estimate can be included in the same chart note. If feeding analysis is not relevant, the professional can use the sections needed for the task.

Review one chart note

The combined chart note brings together completed measurements, selected methods, and results. Blank or incomplete sections are left out. Before copying the note or saving it as a PDF, review the included calculations and adapt the wording to the assessment and facility requirements. RDCalc is a calculation aid; it does not replace clinical judgment or function as an electronic health record.

Choose a standalone tool or the connected workflow

Free core calculators remain available for individual calculations. The connected adult workflow is part of RDCalc Pro and requires sign-in. The public demonstration at https://rdcalc.co/ uses synthetic measurements and is available to explore before accessing the Pro workflow at https://rdcalc.co/calculators/clinical-nutrition-workflow.

RDCalc was cofounded by engineer and software builder Rami Abdelhadi and Lul Taher, RD, who contributed clinical-review input. The platform grew from the aim of keeping related calculation steps and their explanations together.

RDCalc is intended for qualified professionals. Do not enter patient identifiers or protected health information. Demonstration screenshots show synthetic examples, not patient cases.
